Oklahoma St 33, Southern Miss 23
Houston, TX (Sports Network) - Rashaun Woods caught nine passes for 165 yards,
and Luke Phillips kicked four field goals to help lead Oklahoma State to a
33-23 win over Southern Mississippi in the Houston Bowl at Reliant Stadium.
Josh Fields threw for 297 yards and two touchdowns on 20-of-39 attempts for
the Cowboys (8-5), who posted 13 straight points in the fourth quarter to
record their fourth straight win and overcome a 23-20 deficit.
Phillips converted a 29-yard field goal on the first play of the fourth
quarter. The play gave Oklahoma State a 23-23 tie, the fourth of the
game.
Tatum Bell's 22-yard touchdown run put the Cowboys ahead 30-23 with 8:07
remaining in the fourth. Phillips added a 23-yarder with 5:16 remaining to
extend the lead to 33-23.
Bell ended with 159 yards on 12 carries for Oklahoma State, and finished the
season with 1,105 yards.
Dustin Almond completed 10-of-25 passes for 171 yards for the Golden
Eagles (7-6), who lost three of their final four games. Chris Johnson caught
five of his throws for 67 yards, and Curt Jones kicked three field goals.
Mike Denard's three-yard touchdown catch and a 46-yard field goal by Phillips
gave the Cowboys a 10-0 lead midway through the first quarter.
The Eagles forged a 10-10 tie 4:28 into the second quarter on a 13-yard
touchdown run by Almond. Jones kicked a 38-yard field goal with 2:51 left in
the first quarter.
Phillips tied his personal best with a 52-yard kick to put Oklahoma State
ahead 13-10 with 8:05 left in the second quarter. Jones responded for Southern
Miss with a 24-yard field goal 5:28 later to force a 13-13 tie.
But the Cowboys took a 20-13 lead 1:38 before the half on a 51-yard touchdown
reception by Woods.
The Eagles forced the game's third tie, at 20-20, on James Walley's three-yard
touchdown run 4:10 into the third quarter. They took a 23-20 lead, their first
of the game, on a 30-yard field goal by Jones with 4:13 left in the third
quarter.
Game Notes: Walley posted 78 rushing yards on 22 carries for Southern Miss...Oklahoma
State improved to 10-4 in bowl games, posting their first win since beating
Wyoming 62-14 in the Holiday Bowl on December 30, 1988...Southern Miss leads
the series 2-1...The Eagles are 5-8 in bowl games.
