Orlando, FL - Mississippi Southern Coach Pie Vann called this 20-13 loss to West Texas State "my toughest loss ever," although Vann would go on to coach 11 years.  The Southerners jumped out to an early 13-0 lead at halftime and were threatening early in the third quarter when the Buffaloes' defensive back Ron Mills returned an interception 75 yards for a touchdown to ignite West Texas State.
J.C. Arban scored MSC's first touchdown on a 51-yard statue of Liberty play and Bobby Huges threw a 53-yard bomb to Jerry Taylor for Mississippi Southern's other score, but it was not enough as Mills scored on a two-yard romp and quarterback ubba Hillman scampered 19 yards for the other score, stealing victory away from Mississippi Southern.
The following day, the Orlando Sentinel called the game the "Best in 11 Years!"
