El Paso, TX - Although it was the second consecutive trip to the Sun Bowl for the Southerners, the result turned out to be the same as the UTEP quarterback and Sun Bowl MVP Dick Shinaut threw for two touchdowns, booted a 14-yard field goal, and led the Miners to a 47-20 victory over the Southerners.  The Miners struck early, recovering a fumble in the MSC end zone for the first score.  UTEP continued to control the game and built up a 30-7 halftime lead.  The MSC first score came on a billy Jarrell 13-yard pass to Tommie Wood.  The other MSC score came on a 13-yard run by Fred Smallwood in the third quarter.
